Never too young to start!

Youre never too old to start racing!, At a sprightly 53 years of age, Carrowdores David Carleton will make his road race debut at the KDM Hire Cookstown 100,when he starts in the 500 Classic race on his Honda.

A latecomer to racing, David has been a lifelong fan of road racing, having been brought up on the now defunct Carrowdore 100 course at Cardy Corner, the Carleton household was an open door house for race day, where the race fans were fed and watered etc. It was this homily type of persona, that David got to meet many great riders.

“Watching the legends such as McCullough, Joey and Mervyn etc battling it out around Carrowdore, was something out of this world, I don’t think we actually realised the time, what we had, now that the circuit is no longer used for road racing!”

Some years later, David bought a scrambler (or a moto cross bike, as they are called these days!) , did a few races, before  both work and family took over, the bikes were put to the side, as practicalities were put in prespective.

When his young lad got a bike, the bug started again, and David returned to racing scramblers, this time , in the Classic Scramble events.

As an engineer by trade, DC got offered some work as a mechanic with some riders, and before long, was working for some of the top riders, such as Cameron Donald!

Carleton, also sponsored some riders over the years, and in 2015, whilst working at the IOM TT, he met up with the Gentleman of Classic Racing scene, John Chapman of JC Racing. John invited DC to work with his team at the MGP later in the year, when Gary Johnston was riding for them on the Italian MV Agusta machine. However, unknown to DC, John had pencilled Carleton in for a run around the mountain circuit on his RS250 Honda in the parade lap, which proceeded Mondays Classic races!

“This was totally out of the blue!, and an experience, which I will never forget, and I will NEVER be able to Thank John  enough for this honour, Something I will never erase out of my mind!”

The run out on the Honda was enough to convince David, to purchase a bike for the circuit races, and a 500 Honda was purchased. Now with enough races behind him, David is now realising a childhood dream, to ride between the hedges, around a closed road , not to emulate his heroes, but to realise the Buzz that ALL road racers get.

David now faces a race against time to have his bike ready for this weekends race, following a blow up at Tandragee last saturday

53 years of age may seem old for some, it may seem old for a newcomer, but for David, its a youthful 53, when he lines his 500 Honda up on the grid for the Classic race at the 2017 KDM Hire Cookstown 100
